By the time the heating season kicks off, secure your windows: no holes in your defence!
What difference does it make?
Windows let in draughts like a bad defence lets in goals. Around 20% of the heat is lost through windows. As winter approaches, it takes more and more energy to keep it the same temperature inside!
This activity lowers your carbon footprint by:
50 KG CO₂
What do you need?
- A roll of draught excluder tape
- A pair of scissors
- Washing up liquid
Step by step
Before heading to your local DIY shop, have a look at your windows.
Open one and see whether there's already a draught excluder band along the edge of the window frame.
If not - or the ones you have are looking old, measure up!
Buy some self-adhesive foam draught excluder roll that'll fit the width of your window stop.
Before sticking the draught excluder on, make sure the surface of the window frame is really clean - dust it; wash down with mild detergent.
Once it is dry, remove the protective tape and fit the foam on the frame of the window. Once you reach the end, carefully cut the roll with scissors.
Ask someone to take a picture of the proud team member having sealed up its defence - then head to the next window!
Need Help?
You shall find it easily at your local DIY shop. Online you could order from the low ernergy supermarket.
From £1 to £4 for a 5 meter roll.
Here is one we like.
There are some alternatives that are a bit more complex to install and a bit pricier. You can check the draught proffing section of the lower energy supermarket online shop.
Ideally, do them all! That will save most energy.
